IN AND OUT OF PRISON

Despite promises made to judges regarding the boys staying out of trouble, John and Clarence became more emboldened in their criminal activities and graduated to breaking into cars, homes and businesses as a way of making quick money. They were arrested six times the next couple of years, but received light sentences because they were minors.

They’d keep out of trouble for a while, but in 1950 Clarence and Alfred were caught breaking into a house and this time sent to Atlanta State Penitentiary. Upon their release a year later, Clarence was again caught breaking and entering, and sentenced

to five years in Florida State Prison. While working on a road gang he escaped. When Clarence made it home, he was promptly rearrested. Alfred escaped from prison in December and hid at the Pits outside of Ruskin, where he lived for the next five years.

The brothers eventually connected with famous Los Angeles mobster, Mickey Cohen. Knowing of their skills as farmers, he wanted them to move to Tijuana, Mexico and start a marijuana farm. But heat from the Kennedy brothers investigating his criminal enterprises became too intense for Cohen, and so he was forced to shut down his operation for a while. The brothers grew impatient about getting the money they wanted for a farm of their own and robbed a bank in Colombia, Alabama, in 1958, where they made off with $19,000. They were caught a week later and tried for their crime.

John and Clarence were sent to U.S. Penitentiary, Leavenworth in 1958. But a failed escape sent them straight to Alcatraz.
